Unnamed Road, Stirling Range National Park, Western Australia

Experience: Wildflower Time: 1-3 hours Length: 3.5 km Difficulty: Grade 4 This is a short and steep hike in the Stirling Ranges. 3.5 kilometres return, with a total ascent of 400 metres and lots of steps along the way. Wildflowers, including the endemic mountain bells, are a feature of this walk. A boulder-strewn valley near the start and rocky spires on the peaks of Mt Trio make this an intriguing walk. Mount Trio comprises three separate peaks linked together by a plateau. The walk commences with a steep climb that leads to a broad saddle between the north and east peaks. From the saddle it's an easy stroll to the north peak where you can enjoy sweeping views of Mt Toolbrunup and mountains to the south-west. Montane thicket on the upper levels of the peaks puts on a colourful display of wildflowers in spring and early summer. The trail starts and finishes at a picnic area set amongst shady trees, a pleasant place to rest after your walk. No camping or overnight parking allowed. No dogs permitted.

Nice walk up and back. It's not a loop walk, return on the same track. Steep at the start and tough going. Took just on two hours to complete. Nice view from the top.

We did a walk up with friends and three boys 3, 5 and 6yo. The weather was nice, partly cloudy, we didn't need any hiking poles, the stairs were quite stable. Windy on top, so definitely pack a jacket, just in case.

Open now and has had new steps put in due to the fire. It's very rugged and loose terrain so I would recommend hiking boots and hiking poles as you'll need all the grip you can get, the path is very narrow with a steep decline. I hiked up with 18-20kg of camera gear to take photos at the top, make sure you also bring a head torch and warm clothes as the temperature drops fast.
