Description
The magnificent Mitchell Falls, or Punamii-unpuu, are an iconic Kimberley landmark and a place of cultural and spiritual significance for the Wunambal people.
Allow four to six hours for the moderate to difficult 8.6 km round trip to Mitchell Falls so that time can be spent at the falls. The walk is over rough country but the track is marked and is reasonably well-worn. If in doubt, walk in close vicinity to the creek. Take care near the many cliffs.
You can stop and view Little Mertens Falls 800 m from the camping area on the way to Mitchell Falls.
Swimming is not permitted below the falls, due to the possible presence of salt water crocodiles.
Mertens Gorge
Large and dramatic falls en route to the Mitchell Falls which plunge into a narrow chasm known as Big Mertens Falls 2.5 km from the camping area. Take care near the rocky cliffs.
Pets are not permitted.

Not an easy walk but easily manageable without taking the chopper. If you know how to put a foot on front of the other you'll be up there in max 2.5 hours and down in 2. Save your money and the noise for yourself and the others and challenge yourself. You'll be rewarded by a nice a view and a nice walk.

River crossing is to the west maybe 400m further upstream. Poles mark the way. Located towards the helipad. Safer to cross there and please don't cross too close to the main Mitchell falls. One slip or drop something and a gonner. Track does take a sharp left when reach the rocks above top of falls. Easy to miss and easy walk track to river crossing near helipad. This seems not marked as separate point of interest, as at this entry.

Absolutely stunning waterfalls and a favourite place to swim The walk was easy enough, it took us an hour to walk in and the same walking out Great to stop along the way to have a swim in all the pools on the way
