3 sites reserved for Dirk Hartog Island transit passengers. The 4WD Barge 'Hartog Explorer' operates 7 days a week ex Barge Landing Beach, Steep Point. The barge is a purpose built landing craft designed to carry a 4WD vehicle and off road camper trailer with passengers to Dirk Hartog Island. Bookings are essential and must be made 48 hours prior to arrival. Maximum combined length of 4WD & Trailer is 10.6m. Steep Point can only be accessed by high clearance four-wheel drive vehicle or by boat. The access road is long and rough (140km of unsealed track - about three hours driving). Be prepared. Only high clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles are able to traverse the last 30km of sandy tracks. Permits are required and camp sites are popular so book well in advance. For details see www.sharkbay.org, email steeppointranger@dbca.com.au or phone (08) 9948 3993. Camping fees apply and bookings are essential. Facilities in this remote area are limited to pit toilets. You will need to bring in all you need and take your rubbish out with you. Remember to make sure you have sufficient fresh water, food and fuel. Pets are not allowed at Steep Point and Edel Land. Campfires are not permitted.

Absolutely gorgeous spot! We were lucky to get this site for a night with the help of the rangers at steep point. We saw many fish, dolphins, sharks, whales it was an amazing day/night. The 4WD was an adventure to get here, rough at times but really doable (just long- it was close to 4 hours with stop at blow holes on the way).

OMG !! One word only - HEAVEN !!! What a spot ! Feel like we're on a deserted island. This place is truely magical. Wish we booked longer. The drive along the coastline is spectacular!! So much diversity- ruggered cliffs and ocean, huge sand dunes, amazing flora of so many colours and we saw some goats, snakes and rabbits along the way. There are a few spots that we were a little on an angle but just take it slowly. We came through with a standard Ford Ranger no problems at all. It's the most beautiful drive we have done in 6 months on the road. FB @Spontaneouswanderers

3 sites big enough for party of 2 couples travelling to DHI together. Right on beach. few mosquitoes but not really bad as previously mentioned thank goodness Track in very corrugated in places tyres at 16psi. We towed off road camper. Def need a flag flying so others can see you coming. Took at least 3 hrs from the Overlander roadhouse. Lovely camp sites right along beach.
