It is a stone and concrete wall on a rocky outcrop on the beach, which was the end of the No 1 rabbit proof fence running from here 1834 km to Cape Kerauden. Surveyed in 1901 by Government Surveyor A W Canning and completed in 1907.
The Rabbit-Proof Fence in Western Australia runs from Starvation Boat Harbour near Esperance in the south to Wallal on the 80 Mile Beach in the northwest. The fence was built in stages over six years, from 1901 to 1907:
The Rabbit-Proof Fence was built to prevent rabbits from entering Western Australia's agricultural areas and damaging the land. However, rabbits were able to get into the areas the fences were intended to protect, even while construction was underway.
The Rabbit-Proof Fence is also the name of a 2002 Australian film directed by Phillip Noyce. The film is about three Aboriginal girls who walk 1,600 kilometers of the fence to return to their community.
