Bungarun Leprosarium Heritage Trail Walk
Point of InterestDescription
Bungarun Heritage Trail Walk takes you through the site of the previous Derby Leprosarium. This is aplace of deep significance to former patients, nursing staff and the history of medical services in Western Australia.
The Derby Leprosarium was constructed in 1936 for people suffering from Hansen's disease (leprosy) when authorities realised aboriginal people with leprocy were suffering mistreatment and malnutrition. Over the next 80 years thousands of aboriginal people from across WA passed through its doors.
The trail will lead you to the cemetery which is located on the eastern edge of this site.
The site is locked and a key is available from the Derby Visitors Centre.
