Description

1140 Lighthouse Road Cape Otway Cape Otway Lighthouse is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia and considered the most significant. This leading attraction on the Great Ocean Road is a must for all visitors. Built in 1848, the lighthouse known as the Beacon of Hope, sits 90 metres above the pristine ocean of Bass Strait. Hundreds of lives were lost along this shipwreck coast a sad but fascinating history which led to the building of the Lightstation on the cliffs edge. For many thousands of 19th century migrants, who spent months travelling to Australia by ship, Cape Otway was their first sight of land after leaving Europe, Asia and North America. Open: Friday to Tuesday 10am- 5pm (last entry 4.30pm) Closed : Wednesdays & Thursdays Closed Christmas Day Entry fees apply with no access available to the Lightstation Heritage Precinct or Lighthouse outside of our opening hours. Proof of double vaccination is a requirement of entry as per state mandate. Face masks are required to be worn in all buildings. The Lightkeeper's Cafe is open 10.30am-4pm on days the Lightstation is open and is located in the centre of our Heritage Precinct. Due to its location and our limited heritage infrastructure, the cafe is only accessible to visitors of the Lightstation. Due to staffing limitations, the cafe will be serving a selection of tea & coffee, Scones with Jam & Cream and sweet treats. We will not be offering a lunch menu in the 2021-2022 summer season.
