After talking to the good woman at Innamincka trading post we decided we'd go out for a night. It took us 6 hours to get there! We are in a sturdy built high clearance low geared converted mid size bus. Not 4wd. When we finally got out there we did not turn right, it's a soft sand dune to the lakeside track. Aside from our slow journey (which included sightseeing and lunch stops) we had no problems. We camped creek side and walked everywhere else.

Coongie Lake is stunning- we had a small group of brolgas fly in and graze in front of our camp for two days. Thousands of native hens all along the shoreline in front of us.

Further to my post below, I want to say that although we aren't keen birders we found it was worth the long journey. We could never imagined such an expanse of fresh water in the desert!
