Rainbow Valley Campsite

4.2 from 29 users

Rainbow Valley has scenic sandstone bluffs and cliffs that are a photographer's delight. These are most impressive in the soft light of the morning or afternoon around sunset. The turn-off to the Reserve is 75 kilometres south of Alice Springs along the Stuart Highway. From here it is a 22 kilometre stretch east, along an unsealed road which has some sandy patches. For this reason 4WD is recommended, but not essential. Camping is permitted in the two designated camping areas only. Sites are unpowered and suitable for tents, camper trailers and caravans. Facilities include communal gas and wood barbecues, picnic tables and pit toilets. Camping sites are booked online only- no phone service at reserve. Firewood collection is not permitted in the reserve, fires are only permitted in designated fire pits. Bins are not provided, so take your rubbish with you. Pets and generators are not permitted.

Gorgeous place! Beautifully maintained. Drop toilet. We camped in the bush camp no. 8. This spot is at the back of the campsite and was very quiet with gorgeous views and lots of bird life. You can see rock formations all day from the main camp but if busy I imagine it to be quite noisy. If you want views all day book the main campsite. Alternatively if you want peace and quiet book the bush camp and do the 2min walk up the little dune to see the sunset or a short drive to the parking bays if you want to take chairs and some drinks. Had a nightmare of a time making this booking as the website is not suitable for mobile phones, as people have pointed out. The best way I found to book is by calling their 1300 number. Check my photos for the number.

There are 2 sites. Rainbow valley camp ground no 1-5, then rainbow valley bush campground 1-10. Both have good clean serviced toilets but the first also has gas barbecue and rotundas with table and chairs. The first has a better view too. We booked over the phone. They're all lovely but I wish we had been informed and allocated the first one.

Not worth trying to book with your phone as Parks website is not optimized for mobile devices. However tablets (or laptop) seem to work fine. Thank me later :)
