Description

Guwatjurumurru/Giddy River is a river with beautiful waterholes and mini-gorges. Resistant rock has defined the shape of the river channel and forms shallow shelves between the more deeply carved sections of the watercourse. Located approximately 40km from Nhulunbuy, the track provides access to the western side of the river and the rock pools there. There are camping areas located on both sides of the river. Access is via 4WD only and sites are suitable for tents and camper trailers. Toilets, picnic tables, bbq and fire rings are available. Genaral Permits are required for each individual person visiting this Recreation Area. This area is managed by Dhimurru according to the conditions and requirements of the Traditional Landowners. The permit covers day trips, camping and fishing activities. Permit applications can be made online or by contacting the Dhimurru office on 08 8939 2700 or permits@dhimurru.com.au. Permits must be obtained prior to arrival.

Beautiful campground (2) across the road from a stunning gorge and waterfall. Near the toilet. Safer swimming is probably at 1 or 3 but best view is definitely 2.

4WD access only due to deep ruts in track. There is a turning circle as part of the formed track, just past site 3. We camped here (site 2), and for our set up we found this suited us. Visible from the track, but still reasonably private with scrub surrounding it. Only toilet in the area is here. Huge area. Shade in mid arvo but not much during the day. We use solar so it was perfect for us. Beautiful view of the river! There is access to water available, however we weren't keen to swim here due to only one exit, steep access and deep pools on either side. You can hear the falls from camp, lovely to fall asleep to.

There are 2 campsites here. The larger site has toilets. We stayed at the first campsite. Very peaceful & found a little hidden deep rock pool to swim in safely away from Crocs. This spot would be more suitable for people with younger kids. Both spots are also available for day visitors who have a permit. No Caravans permitted. Very private. Thank you Dhimurru people for allowing us to stay here.
