Ellery Big Hole, Northern Territory

Description

High red cliffs, a large waterhole and a sandy creek fringed by gums make this one of the most popular and picturesque walking, camping and picnicking spots in the West MacDonnell Ranges. Much more than just a popular place to take a refreshing dip, Ellery Creek Big Hole is also recognised as an internationally significant geological site. The spectacular waterhole is fed by the West MacDonnell Ranges (Tjoritja) and surrounded by high red cliffs and sandy Ellery Creek. The Dolomite Walk (3 km loop walk - 1.5 hrs) is a great way to take in the facinating geological processes of the site. The walk is along a marked, unsealed path with some steady inclines. Camping is permitted (fees apply and are payable on site). Entry is via a gravel road suitable for two-wheel drive vehicles. This paid campground offers toilets and swimming. Dogs are not permitted. It is accessible to motorbikes, RVs, camper trailers and caravans. Camping in tents is allowed. Generators are not permitted. Bins are not provided. Take your rubbish with you.

The waterhole is beautiful. Strange canpsite! If big van (ours is 21'6) you can only fit into site 2, 4, 5 or 6. 2 is flat and opposite toilets. 4 and 5 are a combined site and a bit steep. 6 is standalone but not flat. 4, 5 and 6 are on the road in and out but not a huge deal. Good value at $15 for a family per night. Flushing toilets. BYO water.

Some sites a big tight for vans. Nice spot to camp. Dolomite Walk is worth it, lovely flowers out at present. Ellery Big Hole is lovely. Sad the fish die at this time of year, get algae on their gills and can't breathe, so die.

Would love to know who designed these campgrounds!?!? Site sizes vary dramatically!! Ours (think it was 7) just for a regular size vehicle. Campground was fine but not one of our favourites. Busy spot with all the Larapinta hikers.
