Explore deeper into the Red Centre on this full-day 4WD trip from Alice Springs, learning more about the culture, history, and nature of Finke Gorge National Park, including Palm Valley.
Your day starts with collection from your Alice Springs accommodation before heading to Hermannsburg, passing through the picturesque West MacDonnell Ranges. Enjoy some morning tea before continuing along the ancient Finke River bed in the custom-built 4WD.
Stop off at The Amphitheatre before driving into Palm Valley. This desert oasis is a maze of sandstone pinnacles and gorges and is home to rare and diverse plants, including its namesake, the red cabbage palm (Livistona mariae). It's a mesmerising landscape, and you'll have the opportunity to complete the River Walk to best experience this wonderland.
As you depart Palm Valley, visit at Cycad Gorge before stopping for a Bushman's lunch at the picturesque picnic area.
After lunch, it's time to visit the Historic Precinct of Hermannsburg, known to the Arrarnta people as 'Ntaria'. It's the birthplace of legendary Aboriginal watercolour artist Albert Namatjira, who used the surrounding landscapes as inspiration for his creations. Take a look at the historic buildings and the Art Gallery during your visit.
Finally, you'll start the return journey to Alice Springs in the late afternoon, arriving back at your accommodation around 5:30 pm.
