Mitsuaki Tanabe was a world-renowned sculptor from Japan and has works on display all around the world, including the spectacular carvings in and around Mt Bundy, NT, where he spent nine years carving granite.
Tanabe was born in 1939 and spent his life as an artist focusing on MOMI (Wild Rice) and it's links to the growth of civilisation over 7,000 years of history. His work also depicts many local creatures such as insects, reptiles and arachnids.
In 2014 Mitsuaki died suddenly from a stroke at the aged 76, leaving his key wild rice piece down a steep hill remaining unfinished..
